opening reception:  6:30 - 8:30
This exhibition will feature 140 works of art by 51 prominent professional craft artists (clay, glass, metal, wood-working and fiber), from 25 states plus Canada and Australia.  These artists make their living by creating and selling fine art crafts.  Many of the most renowned artisans are juried participants in the most prestigious art shows in the U.S.  Including Chicago’s SOFA at Navy Pier; Grand Rapids’ Art Prize; and Ann Arbor’s Summer Art Fair.  Guest Curator, Jim Sondgeroth has personally selected and invited each artist.  This unique exhibit expands on the first two Making it in Crafts exhibits shown at the Art Museum in 2011 and 2014.  It is one of the most exciting and comprehensive arts and crafts shows to be presented in the Midwest.

Visit my blog post about the reception on May 12.

Material Revival renews and celebrates a collaboration, begun 4 years ago for Innovations 9, between friends and colleagues who share a student/teacher/mentor relationship and who strive for a collective conversation that will take them out of their comfort zones to expand how they work conceptually, materially and how they think about their work. Erin Cork Woolfolk, Jo Stealey, Laura Strand, Erin Vigneau Dimick, and curator Pat Vivod are joined this year by new member Sarah Gillespie in the challenge to create inspired new bodies of work by integrating the shared materials from each other’s studios into their own work.

Innovations in Textiles is many events scattered over more than 15 gallery exhibits bringing artists from outside the area, artist talks, and workshops.

Rio Wrenn traveled from Portland, Oregon for the opening reception and offered a 2 day workshop,  Printing and Dyeing with Rust and Tannins, on August 23 and 24, 2014 at the Textile Lab at SIUE Department of Art and Design.  We were able to accommodate 15 students and had a fabulous time.

Fabienne Rey was to have come too, but due to family illness was not able to join us to teach a 2nd workshop on eco printing.  We sincerely hope she can come another time.
