Google of course did send out warnings months ago. But now zero hour is approaching. December 2023 the fun begins. As the title says—I love deadlines.

I set up Sentimental Pentimento initially as an alternative to an art website. The title was taken from a piece I made in 2007, if memory serves, and it in turn borrowed the title from Lillian Hellman’s book of the same name. Along the way the blog became much more—a chronicle of my work both finished and in progress; all the various shows I participated in or curated; plus work by others.

My outdoor studio, seen above behind the shed, has been idle since fall of 2017. I made a ton of work that year, in fact much more fabric was rusted that year than any other, more than 50 pieces in all. I did several shows too and It wore me out. I always take a break between seasons, but in the space of the following two years, both my brother and my sister passed away and I had a stroke in between their deaths.

FYI, it was mild, as strokes go, and I fully recovered, but the spark to create has not returned. I did participate in the last ever Innovations in Textiles event in 2019 by exhibiting some work at the RAC Gallery on Delmar in St. Louis along with fellow grads by invitation of my professor from the fiber department at SIUE. Then In the summer of 2022 I curated a show for a friend who has a gallery in Hillsboro, IL. I hadn't curated since 2015 and like always, I forgot how much work goes into the planning and installation. I’m way too old and out of shape for the level of physical work required. It was a humdinger of a show though, and I’m glad it happened.

Anyhoo, here I am trying to save something important to me, just because I’m a saver. We had a spectacular fall color display here in south western Illinois. Our maple trees, fire bushes, sassafras and sweet gums provided some beautiful scenes around the yard. So for the time being I’ll leave you with my favorite photo of the batch I took in late October.

Pat Vivodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09411887608636024114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2036939980065534881.post-31120784999151934842018-12-02T15:41:00.000-06:002018-12-02T15:52:17.964-06:00Support Artists! As a printmaker over 15 years ago, I experimented with fabric to lift prints from rusty farm tools. It was love at first sight! I embraced organic printing, as I called it, because it inspired spontaneity and informed my ideas about process and content. Treating fabric as a vast landscape, I adapted arashi shibori techniques to wrapping rusted pipes, tucking leaves into folds to create additional resists. I prefer to work with silk because it is beautiful and deceptively fragile, but capable (to a point) of surviving the assault of rust printing. Rust is a gorgeous medium, offering an array of colors and exciting, unpredictable patterns when tempered by tea and tannins that defuse the corrosive power of the rust resulting in permanent and stable marks on the fabric. This unsettling recipe of rust and silk goes beyond mere design, however. It is a fitting metaphor for both the fantastic beauty of our earth and the assault on the environment that we are perpetrating to our own detriment.

His work is the embodiment of his experience defined by the environment that surrounded his forced internment as a child during WWII at Manzanar. On Friday evening, Oct 20, beginning 7:30, after the main gallery artist reception, there is a special event Hidden Histories with films and discussion on the Japanese internment camps where Arthur can share his very personal experiences.
Cedarhurst Biennial opens Sunday, July 30, 2017 with a preview for exhibiting artists on July 29. The show continues through October 8, 2017

The Biennial is open to artists in Illinois south of I-80, and the metropolitan regions of St. Louis, MO, Evansville, IN, and Paducah, KY. They award great prizes -- so fingers are crossed.

My piece (left), The Devil Is in the Details, was accepted into the show.

I'm in good company--several local friends are also in the show.
Susan Bostwick - ceramics
Brigham Dimick - painting
Andrew Dobson (two pieces!! Yeah!) - photography
Laura Strand - weaving
David Yates - painting

In all there are 60 pieces in the show by 54 artists juried from a pool of 140 artists and 383 entries.

Cedarhurst is situated in the midst of a sculpture park at 2600 Richview Road, Mt. Vernon, IL.
I can't tell you how thrilled I was to be able to attend the opening of this exhibit at the Art Museum for Greater Lafayette. Altogether about a 4 hour drive for my husband and I, but we did combine the trip with a visit later to a dear friend who lives in Indiana about 2 hours south of Lafayette.

When we started looking for a hotel close by the museum, we discovered that Purdue University was holding graduation ceremonies the same day as the opening, so rooms were going for premium prices and we opted to stay in Crawfordsville about 27 miles to the south on Rt 231. I recommend the Best Buy that is just off I-74. Very nice room. Cracker Barrel is conveniently next door, so we grabbed an early supper there before changing and driving up to Lafayette for the opening. I had the route memorized from the delivery trip in April, but the museum is easy to find.
The exhibit features 140 works by 51 artists from 25 states, Australia, and Canada spread over 2 galleries in the museum. A full color catalog was created that has photos of all the work plus artist websites which I've been exploring day by day since I received mine. Jim Sondgeroth pictured left was the guest curator. I had lunch with him the day I delivered work and learned that like me, he taught high school art for many years. He serves on the board of the museum. Jim personally selected all the artists for this exhibit and the previous two held in 2011 and 2014. I'm very proud to be included in this one... and very happy to say I've been invited back for the 2020 show.
On the day I delivered my work I met Jim and Michael Crowthers (left)who is the museum curator and installer of the exhibit. Michael did a phenomenal job in arranging the exhibit. I couldn't be more pleased with how my work was showcased. This exhibit is stunning both in the calibre of the work and the diversity of the mediums.

There were six artists I think at the reception including Joshua DeMonte (below) who came all the way from Maryland. Joshua was a delight to meet and talk to. He attempted to educate me about 3-D printing which is his medium now (he is a metalsmith). He teaches at Towson University.

There were a few other artists working in fiber or using fiber techniques with non fiber materials such as Brooke Marks-Swanson / Indiana, who I met, but forgot to photograph her work. She does striking large scale wearable adornments/jewelry using hand knit leather combined with silver and gold. Kate Cusack / New York, does equally striking wearable neck pieces using zippers and thread. Jill Ault / Michigan had three stunning art quilts in the show using digitally printed cotton to create optical effects. Geoffrey Gorman's rabbit, below left, utilized fabric that is rusted over time by the wires that bind the fabric to the form. I saw Gorman's work at SOFA Chicago a few years ago.

Family Tree c2016 Patricia Vivod

This is a small piece for me, only 24x12, the silk is mounted on a canvas stretcher that I covered with felt first, to round off the sharp edges and corners and cushion the silk.

It started out as a scarf that failed to print consistently and the striking rust pattern went a little too far for comfort to use as a wearable so I cut off the portion I liked for mounting. The silk was wrapped around to the back of the frame and stitched to the felt.

The title comes from the trivets at the top of the image. I've been collecting the trees for some years now in two sizes...I've got several. My latest acquisition was found when I was Christmas shopping and has a mark on the back that I don't recall seeing on my other trees. It shows more detail on the front than some of the others too, so I'll have to compare when I get back out to my studio. It's way too cold now to go rummaging around. So much of what passes for antique is really reproduction, but if it's decorative and will rust for my purposes, who cares.

A problem I often run into when searching for suitable rusting sources is that dealers often use paint or polyurethane to prevent or preserve rust. More and more people are buying up iron to decorate with. In fact a whole industry has sprung up. Rust is a natural and beautiful patina...why would anyone want to mess with it? Leave it alone I say. Let the buyer decide.

One of the trees didn't print as well as the others--design wise I love the varied effect, but the color glitch could be caused by any number of problems including having vestiges of some polyurethane on the surface that I failed to remove. My trees all look rusty but there might be a patina building up that makes it difficult to get a decent print. I may need to do some wire brushing ahead of any new work.

This piece is in an exhibit and for sale at The Edwardsville Arts Center through Feburary 3, 2017.

I don't much care for chiffon because of the crepey texture. But while looking for something to work with recently (I was temporarily out of dupioni), I decided to use up some remnants I had stashed. The drape and weight of chiffon allowed the fabric to be manipulated into tiny folds and swirls so there is lots of movement in the design and small details. I also used new string so as to create resist marks rather than prints as happens when I reuse string that has soaked up tannins. Iris leaves created additional resist and I soaked the fabric briefly in water rather than vinegar before starting. Tea leaves, and cheap wine were used in the process of setting up the design.

When I checked on the fabric several hours later, I feared not much was going on, so splashed some vinegar on the top side of the pipe and left it overnight. In the morning I was rewarded with some blackened areas. Overall the color is much less dramatic than my dupioni work but I quite like the soft result. It is very likely also related to the cooler weather. It may be difficult to detect here, but the darkest areas have a definite greenish cast to them. There is very little actual rust showing. The chiffon was photographed against a black background. White washed it out.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A refresher on the From the Inside Out exhibit...
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Four years ago my friend and 8 mile neighbor Elizabeth Adams-Marks and I embarked on a journey to create a fibers show that would celebrate the many ways in which mark making with rust, plant printing and natural dyes on textiles, paper and felt could be experienced in the hands of people who love the process and have a passion for ecological and sustainable practices in their art. We did not want to do a "safe" show. The more EAM and I talked, the more we wanted to do something wild and crazy. So we invited artists we'd met online through social media.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Elizabeth and I live in Illinois and it so happens that our fiber friends live thousands of miles away. Fabienne Rey is in The Netherlands, Irit Dulman is in Israel, and Rio Wrenn is in Portland, Oregon. We are so grateful they said YES! There were lots of bumps along the road to the exhibition, <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">including EAM's fight with cancer (WON!)
and the loss of our first gallery...but we kept our heads and the show opened
in August 2014 at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the gorgeous Art
and Design <span style="font-family: "helvetica";">West Gallery.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We raised money from several donors to fund the show and won a Small Events Grant from Surface Design Association and a scholarship from Missouri Fiber Artists. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Over 300 people came to see the show during its run. A wonderful group of women enrolled in Rio Wrenn's <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Dyeing & Printing with Iron and Tannin W<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">orkshop held in conjunction with the exhibition. We had visitors from Alabama, Florida, Maine, Maryland and Wisconsin; from Chicago, St. Louis and points west in Missouri; and of course Rio came from Oregon.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Now after hundreds of hours of work, we are proud to announce the publication of a comprehensive catalog for the exhibit: From the Inside Out - Felt, Paper, Textiles: Revelations in Natural Mark Making. Every work was photographed, many closeups were shot, plus many gallery shots were taken showing the works in situ...important because we wanted to demonstrate the relationship of the works to each other, to the gallery and the landscape beyond, because the outside was invited into the gallery through its many windows. Many photos are quite large and span two page layouts. Very detailed captions were written; artists and curatorial statements and other commentary is included. The catalog is 100 pages, full color, 8 x 10 landscape format. And one more thing...like the exhibit itself, we believe this book is a work of art.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Elizabeth and I chose Blurb, a self publishing print on demand company to create the book. We were not disappointed. Blurb creates truly bookstore quality books and includes a free ISBN number for all print versions. The software is easy to use and free to download with no time limit on book creation. It was a breeze to upload photos and customize the layouts plus we had rich text, spell check and other easy editing tools to use. Very conveniently, we also had a Blurb support team at our disposal when we ran into a glitch or a problem. They never failed to lend a hand.
<span style="font-family: "\22 trebuchet ms\22 " , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "\22 trebuchet ms\22 " , sans-serif;">Our catalog is available in all formats and can be purchased online in softcover, hardcover image wrap, hardcover with dust jacket, PDF--which will open on most platforms, and ebook format--which is set up especially for iPads.<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">You can preview the book two ways--if you take a peek at the ebook, you can see the first 30% of the book online, however you'll only see EAM's work in that preview. You can see a scattering of 20+ pages if you open the preview to the print copy you'll get to see at least one layout on each of the five artists.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Elizabeth and I hope you won't be able to resist getting a copy for yourself, to remember the best show you've ever seen ;), and particularly if you were unable to see the show in person. This is the next best thing--we promise.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I think this year has been the busiest of my life in regards to my art. With five shows under my belt, including Material Revival which I curated and participated in, plus contributing a six foot piece to The Riverwork Project, an evolving 300+ foot quilt begun by Sun Smith-Foret, I thought it was time to reveal another project of mine that until now, I've kept out of the public eye.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A most incredible thing happened this past April when I was contacted by an interior designer interested in my work. Her project, on behalf of the architectural firm she works for, was designing and decorating a new spa being built in St. Helena, California.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I sent them several images and to my delight they purchased seven of my large hangings! Last week I received confirmation that the work has been installed and the spa opened on November 2. The seven pieces were hung in public areas of the spa. Two of the pieces were created this summer, one of which is shown at left.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">With the confirmation of installation came word that my work was very well received and another invitation was extended to create eight more pieces. I am beyond thrilled to participate in this venture. The North Bay Business Journal recently featured the $60 million spa and renovation project at the Meadowood Resort in Napa Valley. You can read the article here.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">One of these days, I hope to visit and see my work in its new home.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here are some of the other pieces purchased.
Our fabulous show card in living color -- at the printers now. Can't wait till it gets here.

It's huge - will be 6 x 11"

The card showcases details of work in progress for each of the 6 artists who share a relationship of teacher, student or mentor. We collaborated 4 years ago, and thought it would be great to come together again. I believe we all thought it would be easier this time around--but not a chance. We are more challenged than ever to use each other's materials in our own work and it definitely seems like all of us have more going on in our other lives.

Since we started working on Material Revival, three of us have started or are starting new jobs, one of us had a baby (not me!!), a couple of us have multiple shows going on simultaneously, and two of us moved into new digs this summer. Yikes!

Only a few more weeks left to pull everything together and install the show.

The silk is actually from three separate rusted pieces of fabric and the pattern involves 8 pieces chosen for their coordinated color and pattern. Here's a shot of a beautifully tall model from a fashion show a few years ago orchestrated by my friend Lillian Bates, (I cropped out the distractions of surrounding chaos at Jacoby Arts Center, hence the narrow crop).
Other work in the show includes a set of fiber collages that combined rust prints, composted, and solar dyed fabrics with felt and some commercially printed fabrics. I did lots of free motion embroidery on them and sometimes some needle felting. Here is one of those pieces.
Auri Sacra Fames, if my translation is correct is Latin for accursed hunger for gold. Everything seems to be happening at once. The new blog for the Innovations in Textiles 10 show I'm curating is LIVE. Go visit Material Revival to learn all about the project. I've also put a tab at top of this blog.

Material Revival is a reunion of 5 of the 6 artists who participated in Collaboration Reaping and Sewing in 2011 at Jacoby Arts Center. I've brought Erin Cork Woolfolk, Joe Stealey, Laura Strand, and Erin Vigneau Dimick together again to continue our collaboration and enticed Sarah Gillespie to join us this year. We six are all friends and colleagues, but more importantly we share a teacher/student/mentor relationship. You can read all about the artists at the new blog. You'll find a page for everyone via tabs at the top of the blog.

Erin Vigneau Dimick has lent us this image for promotion purposes for Innovations 10. I'll be posting updates and some sneak peeks at the new work being created on the new blog as information becomes available.
In the last week I've been desperate to get some new scarves done in order to send images to the curator of a show at Stonebridge Valley Arts Center for the showcard. See my events page for details on all the shows.
I've been experimenting with some of the new rust objects I acquired. A few of them need to weather a bit. One of the designs I got appears to have been coated with something and it's a delicate wire piece so I can't take a wire brush to it. I need to be patient.

The piece featured on this scarf rusted beautifully first time out. It's a large art deco-ish piece of iron. Not sure what it's original purpose was. It's got a flange at the bottom center with hole for screw. It's a beautiful piece of perfectly flat iron otherwise. I was fortunate to get a lot of variation in the print and some wonderful bleeding of the tannins.

Here's the whole scarf. The wispy tan design and the black design at the bottom edge below the point is from a first shibori rusting on a pipe that was a partial failure. I wanted to preserve the good parts so was careful with placement of the metal objects I used.

Pardon the emotional post today--sometimes I just have to shout, laugh and cry all at once. Lately everytime I pass by the patio door in the kitchen I expect to see Darcy sitting on the step waiting to be let in. But on April 26, I found her laying in the grass by my iris bed. For 19 years my little gray furball was a constant companion and a stand in daughter as I have no children. She kept me company in the outdoor studio and would pounce on fabric ruffled by the wind. She often drove me crazy at the house because like most "children", if she was in, she wanted out and if she was out, she wanted in. If I had a dollar for every time that patio door opened I'd be rich indeed.

I never really expected her to stick around for 19 years. Experts say that outdoor cats only have half the lifespan of indoor cats. But Darcy was both an innie and outie and could take care of herself even with one eye. She had surgery to remove an eye that was infected several years ago and adapted very well without binocular vision. I never expected her to go so suddenly though. She had no wounds on her body. She looked like she was asleep. Perhaps a heart attack? She is sorely missed and as I face another season in the studio getting ready for three upcoming shows this fall, I think I'm going to be mighty lonely out there. I will have to talk to myself instead.

On top of the agony of losing Darcy, over the last several weeks my eczema, which affects both hands and my feet has flared up big time. It's an accurate predictor of stress. Lots of new work to make and collaboration challenges! This on top of finishing the catalog for the last show, which I promise, dear readers, will be done one of these days!!!!!! Currently I have bandages on 7 of my 10 digits. Makes typing a challenge too. I was in real agony the last couple days because all ten fingertips were so raw and/or cracked I could barely touch anything. When I have flareups, either I can't touch the silk because skin is so rough it will snag the fabric, or my fingertips are numb with thick skin, or I'm bleeding (sorry to gross you out, but painful cracks appear often). The bandages make everything awkward.

There is some good news however in all of this mess. I was ecstatic a week ago when I found this beauty at an antique festival in Maeystown, IL.

I have wanted a silk and velvet crazy quilt like this for decades. Perfect ones are rare and very expensive, particularly if they are heavily embroidered as this one is. I decided to buy this one despite the deterioration of some of the silks because the embroidery and beauty of the whole was just too good to pass up for the price. It is gorgeous and I considered it a bargain.

And I've decided that I'm willing to pay the price to own certain hard to find pieces. After all it's the same as art supplies to me! Unlike a tube of paint, however, my rust doesn't get used up. I found several unique pieces this week and last at Maeystown and others earlier this year. Thank my lucky stars I was in the right place at the right time on Wednesday for sure. It is too cruel I know, but I won't show you the rusty bits I purchased because I haven't photographed anything yet. I think I'd also rather introduce them to you through the fabrics. So stay tuned to see what magic will happen.

The doorbell rang and I had to sign for a somewhat misshapen box covered in brown paper. I have been remiss in not thanking the sender and sharing all the treasures I
found within. Fabienne Rey you are a peach! Frankly, I was struck speechless at first, so forgive my silence on this extraordinary gift.

Actually there were several gifts, each one separately wrapped in brown tissue and tied with striped string accompanied by labels. On top were some cards and eco printed papers for Elizabeth Adams-Marks and I to share along with a gift of a precious blue pod for Elizabeth that she posted about on her FB page. Underneath those items were several more packages. The first one was filled with doilies.
some fabulous doilies some time ago and this box contained several new ones
which I laid out on my glass topped coffee table to photograph (that's not a blue doily, it's a book on the shelf below). Below are some closeups. Perhaps I should take the time to pin them to my black board to get better pictures.
Underneath the doilies was a package that contained two eco printed flags--one for Elizabeth and one for me. The flags are from Dharma. Back in August 2014, the week of installation, the thought of producing a catalog for FTIO was still just something on the to do list. It's now a reality, though not quite done yet.

I still have detail shots of two artists' works to plug into the layouts and some final writing to do, then it will be time to proofread. Not that I haven't been doing proofing as I'm going, but mistakes pop up in the silliest of ways, so need some fresh eyes. Not sure it will be possible to print out a draft copy.

Amazingly I have produced with Elizabeth's help a book that is approaching 100 pages! We hope to make an announcement soon and get the book up on the Blurb website. You'll be the first to know! BTW, we hope to make the book available as print on demand and as an e-book.

Stay tuned...Pat Vivodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09411887608636024114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2036939980065534881.post-23178996696789888972014-10-04T02:17:00.000-05:002014-10-04T02:17:19.544-05:00Beautiful Results!

It's been almost three years but finally Friday night at the Spark and Flame reception at Edwardsville Arts Center I got to see what happened with a piece of rusted yardage I made in 2011. A year or two after the fabric was rusted I donated it to the Friends of Art Auction at SIUE. As a board member of FOA, I was also soliciting work for the auction, so I approached Lillian Bates who owns By Design Boutique in Alton, IL to partner with me by promising to create something with my fabric for the high bidder --who turned out to be Laura Strand.
Rio Wrenn from Portland Oregon, our visiting artist and one of our participants in FTIO joined us at the reception Friday night.

Elizabeth and I are so proud of what we all accomplished and so happy that the response has been so positive. Follow this link to see other reception photos and some I took when I was alone in the gallery at SIUE.
Elizabeth and I are planning a catalog of the exhibition. We'll keep you posted on our progress.
Brought on, in part, by chronic procrastination regarding one's own work, and exasperated by all the little things that crop up in the process.
I am continuing to deprive myself of needed sleep. The reception was Friday--seems a lifetime ago--but only yesterday in my mind (although it's now the wee hours of Sunday morning which means it was two days ago).

Today (Saturday) was the first of Rio's two day workshop and a while ago I could hardly keep my eyes open. Now I am revived for awhile staring at the computer screen, realizing I hadn't posted anything on this blog since July 4. Wow, this exhibition has taken so much energy. Can relax now perhaps. I will post some views of the the exhibition very soon.

In the meantime - above - here's a teaser. In the window is one of Irit Dulman's pieces called Pillar of Salt. It is a breathtaking eco print on wool jersey. To the right are two of Elizabeth Adams-Marks works on hand made paper. In the foreground is the mess of what it's like to install a show…rolling step stool; black framework that will eventually hold an embroidered piece of Fabienne Rey's; A large padded table where we pressed virtually everything that came in the door before it was installed which reminds me of the incredible trust the artists placed in EAM and I to handle their work carefully.

I think she and I could write a book on this curating process. It's been quite an adventure. I could not be happier with this show. I am so proud of what we've accomplished and hope that any of you living in the region can see the show in person. For everyone else, be patient--a catalog will be made.

A sneak peek of the show. This area is directly opposite the main view of gallery and showcases all 5 artists. From left is Irit Dulman's eco printed shibori felt dress; my largest and newest piece, The Feast of Saint Frackcis, layered rust print on the back wall; two of Rio Wrenn's Core pieces that are mounted on canvas, Fabienne Rey's eco printed and embroidered piece mounted on sheer organza and hanging between the two walls, and finally Elizabeth Adams-Marks large hand made paper construction.
